Chinese Beef Recipes - Crispy Meatballs Recipe

Ingredients

  • 225 g/8 oz minced (ground) beef

  • 100 g/4 oz water chestnuts, minced

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 5 ml/1 tsp grated orange rind

  • 5 ml/1 tsp minced ginger root

  • 5 ml/1 tsp salt

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp corn-flour (cornstarch)

  • 225 g/8 oz/2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour

  • 5 ml/1 tsp baking powder

  • 300 ml/1 1/4 cups water

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp groundnut (peanut) oil

  • oil for deep-frying


Method:

  1. Mix together the beef, water chestnuts, 1 egg, orange rind, ginger, salt and corn-flour. Form into small balls.

  2. Arrange in a bowl in a steamer over boiling water and steam for about 20 minutes until cooked. Leave to cool.

  3. Mix the flour, baking powder, remaining egg, water and groundnut (peanut) oil to a thick batter. Dip the meatballs in the batter.

  4. Heat the oil and fry the meatballs until golden brown.
